Venture Outside warmly invites you to embrace and celebrate winter with a full 2-day active retreat in the mountains or the coast of Maine. Come enjoy a range of activities both outdoors and indoors designed to refresh and rejuvenate body, mind, and spirit! Join us for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, yoga, music, and natural history in the wonderful beauty of Maine in the winter.

Immerse and connect with nature during winter by being active outdoors! Tap into the restorative power of nature and let your spirit soar! Practice using all your sense during the starkest of the seasons! Life is everywhere during the winter if you know how to use all your senses, and if you know where to look. We’ll venture outside during at sunrise, daytime, sunset, and nighttime to share in all that nature has to offer!

In addition to the outdoor nature-based activities, you’ll listen to, and participate in, restorative and entertaining music performances and chanting. We’ll also practice at least two full sessions of yoga to balance body and mind.





This retreat will be held at the Poplar Hut of Maine Huts & Trails. Maine Huts & Trails owns and operates a world-class system of backcountry trails and eco-lodges for people-powered recreation in Maine’s Western Mountain region. With miles of maintained trails to explore, and wonderful off-the-grid accommodations, the Poplar Hut is the perfect base for a Venture Outside Winter Wellness Retreat.

Accommodations – Accommodations will be in comfortable heated bunk rooms at the “Hut.” The Hut is an off-the-grid eco lodge situated along the 80-mile trail system. When you arrive at a hut, you’ll find a great room with a wood stove, and a cozy reading area. Every hut is equipped with hot showers, toilets, and convenient gear drying rooms.


All costs include instructor/guide fees, and program materials, 2 nights lodging, and 6 Meals (2 B, 2, L, and 2 D).

The Schoodic Peninsula is the “quiet” corner of Acadia National Park, known for its pounding surf, incredible sunsets, and soft spruce-fir cloaked landscape. With miles of hiking and mountain bike trails, a rugged shoreline of both quiet coves and rugged headlands, and miles of quiet paved park road, the Schoodic peninsula in Acadia N.P. provides the perfect setting for this active retreat.  In partnership with Schoodic Institute for Research & Education, this retreat is held entirely within the park, and based from the Institute’s beautiful campus. This session begins late afternoon on Friday and continues through mid-afternoon on Sunday.

Accommodations: Accommodations are for Friday and Saturday nights at Schoodic Institute in a Standard Double Room in 2 or 4 Bdrm Apt / Shared Bathroom. Apartments are fully furnished, with spacious and comfortable rooms.


 Total cost: $450 – includes $200 Program Tuition and $250 Accommodations

Program Tuition includes instructor/guide fees and any materials

Accommodations include 2 nights lodging and 6 Meals (2 B, 2 L, and 2 D) .

Payment – A $100 non-refundable deposit is due two months before the retreat, with the balance due 1 month in advance. Cost as indicated includes lodging and meals, and all activities, music performances, and participation.


Travel – The Maine Huts are located approximately 3 hours northwest of Portland, Maine. The Schoodic Peninsula is approximately 3 hours north of Portland. We will be happy to try to coordinate car-pooling from the Portland area, or arrange for transportation for those arriving to Maine via air travel. Please call or email us with your interest in car-pooling, or needs for transport.


Weather – Late winter is wonderful time to be in Maine, when the coldest of the days are past, but the snow is lingering.

Packing – A detailed packing list will be provided upon registration.


  • Outdoor activities will accommodate all skill levels; activities will depend on weather conditions.
  • Feel free to participate in, or just listen to, all music performances and chanting.
  • Meals will be delicious, healthy, locally grown ingredients, and will accommodate vegetarians.
  • A detailed itinerary will be provided upon request.
  • Cost does not include skis or snowshoes, but we can assist in lining them up.
